Additionally, it is observed that Catholics have a much higher tendency to continue to work as craftsmen than to move into higher management positions. Weber also observes that Catholic and Protestant parents have their children participate in different types of education, with Protestants more focused on post-school preparation. The fact that Protestants have had a greater amount of wealth throughout history and that they pass it down more effectively is given as one possible reason why they are more successful than Catholics. On page 62, Weber begins to discuss possibilities for this economic disparity. He follows this by exploring the various reasons this observation may have come into being over time. Weber starts chapter one of his work by stating his argument that Protestants are more likely to be higher skilled workers compared to Catholics. In part one, Weber will attempt to formulate a reason as to why this observed phenomenon occurs, by looking at key differences between Protestants and Catholics, capitalism, and Martin Luther’s key idea of a calling that is absent in the totality of Catholicism. In Max Weber’s work The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, he attempts to discern a reason why Protestants continuously find themselves with far more wealth than their Catholic counterparts. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Wemmicks booksThey award golden star stickers to people they find beautiful or exciting or lovable. Then we added Cristobal, the third named storm of the season, and that pushed us into the record books. With an early jump-start to the season, a record number of named storms, and a storm reaching states that don’t normally see tropical systems, this season is off to a fast and interesting start.īefore the season officially began on June 1, we already had two named storms: Arthur and Bertha, which is impressive in and of itself. The Atlantic hurricane season is already one for the record books and it’s only just getting started. 5/30/2023 0 Comments A taste of gold and iron goodreadsKadou's sister didn't even blink at his relationship with Tadek, and was out here finding him a lovely man to have an arranged marriage with. It was all so normalised and seamless and there was none of the negativity of the real world regarding any of it. Neither do they think anything of a queer relationship or gender fluidity. It's just there, smoothly and seamlessly worked in and nobody thinks anything of it. Not only is the romance queer, but the use of different pronouns isn't an issue. The other reason I found this comforting? Queerness is normalised in this book and my heart felt so full as I was reading. It was brilliantly done and obviously I loved my precious little bean Kadou who was more than capable of being a badass despite everything. Like, I really didn't want this book to end and I was low-key distraught to find that I was nearly done with it! I can only hope the author has more like this up their sleeve!įirst thing's first, Kadou, our MC has anxiety and the way I squealed at seeing some anxiety rep in a book, and a fantasy one at that! I used to be way more into fantasy than I currently am and a large part of that has to do with how little rep there can be in fantasy so this book, for me, was kind of like coming home? Like it was so comforting, because I was reading Kadou's POV like.omg it's literally me and I got so emotional it's not even funny. Okaaay, this book took me a little while to read because it's chunky but I also wanted to savour it so badly. They rejected the mythology and believed that the change into animals was a diseased condition brought on by melancholia or drugs. However, a number of ancient writers such as Galen and Virgil provided the first descriptions of lycanthropy. Lycaon (hence the word lycanthropy) displeased Zeus and the deity changed him into a wolf. The oldest report of a man changing into a wolf was from ancient Greek mythology. Origin of the Werewolf: Like the vampire, and unlike Frankenstein’s monster, the werewolf was an ancient figure found in the folklore of people worldwide. There is also a disease, lycanthropy, in which people believe that they change into a werewolf when in fact they do not. By definition, the werewolf is a human being who at various times (usually at the full moon), either voluntarily or involuntarily, changes into a wolf or wolflike creature and assumes many of the characteristics of the wolf, especially its viciousness. That relationship was largely established in the 1930s with the production of two werewolf movies by Universal Pictures and the inclusion of the werewolf and the vampire together in three monster mash films during the 1940s. The werewolf is one of several monsters closely associated in the public mind with the vampire. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Midnight riot aaronovitchCovers will be added in low quality on purpose, similar to Wikipedia ("The copy is of sufficient resolution for commentary and identification but lower resolution than the original book cover.
One such reason, she said, is that "as light travels through a medium - for instance, glass or water droplets - the different frequencies or colors of light travel at different speeds." If we look at light as a wave, then there are "multiple reasons" why certain waves can travel faster than white (or colorless) light in a medium, de Rham said. Light exhibits both particle-like and wave-like characteristics, and can therefore be regarded as both a particle (a photon) and a wave. But there are certain caveats to consider, she said. "Technically, the statement 'nothing can travel faster than the speed of light' isn't quite correct by itself," at least in a non-vacuum setting, Claudia de Rham, a theoretical physicist at Imperial College London, told Live Science in an email. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Blackmore lornaA favourite among females, it was also popular among male readers, and was chosen by male students at Yale in 1906 as their favourite novel. George Gissing wrote in a letter to his brother Algernon that the novel was "quite admirable, approaching Scott as closely as anything since the latter". It received acclaim from Blackmore's contemporary, Margaret Oliphant, and as well from later Victorian writers including Robert Louis Stevenson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Thomas Hardy. The following year it was republished in an inexpensive one-volume edition and became a huge critical and financial success. Publication history īlackmore experienced difficulty in finding a publisher, and the novel was first published anonymously in 1869, in a limited three-volume edition of just 500 copies, of which only 300 sold. In 2003, the novel was listed on the BBC's survey The Big Read. It is a romance based on a group of historical characters and set in the late 17th century in Devon and Somerset, particularly around the East Lyn Valley area of Exmoor. Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor is a novel by English author Richard Doddridge Blackmore, published in 1869. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Gunmetal Magic by Ilona AndrewsAdored Roman - I hope we see him turning up again.
